The New Technical Manager
Overview | Curriculum
"Designed and taught by someone who's been there. Lee's vast experience is evident in this nuts-and-bolts, well-paced course." More...
Even for the most astute and competent people, the transition into management from a technical role can be extremely challenging. The day-to-day responsibilities change, the expectations increase, the working relationships shift, and the intrinsic rewards of the job change. The skills needed to be a capable manager are quite different from those required for intense technical work. Without guidance, the transition can easily take two to three years to accomplish. In today’s fast-paced environment, you are fortunate if you get six months.
This course will speed your transition and alleviate professional stress by clearly articulating the problems most new managers encounter and providing clear, concrete solutions to these problems.
Through lecture, discussion and interactive exercises the three-day seminar will answer the following questions for you:
- What are the basic skills needed for the job?
- Is management right for you? (And what to do if it isn’t.)
- What are the best ways to accelerate your learning within this new role?
- What are the differences between technical and managerial roles?
- What are the unwritten rules for managers?
- What are the basics required for managing people?
- How do you learn more about the business of your company? (and why it is so critical)
- How can you run more productive (and shorter) meetings?
- How do you tailor communications with different parts of the organization to get things done?
- What are the most important questions to ask, how do you ask them, and whom do you ask?
- How do you navigate the budgeting process, from start to finish?
- How do you handle the politics?
- What are the hardest parts of this transition? What tactics have helped others with these challenges?
